Earth Day was initiated on April 22, 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a U. S. Senator from Wisconsin, in response to the ravages of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California the previous year. Nelson's call to action resulted in 20 million Americans rallying coast-to-coast for a healthy, sustainable environment. By 1990 Earth Day had become a global phenomena with 200 million people from 141 countries collectively voicing concerns about environmental issues. Today stewardship of our earth is ever more critical to the sustainability of our planet.
